Washington, D.C. — Today, Public Private Strategies’ founder Rhett Buttle responded to President Biden’s State of the Union. Earlier, Buttle was featured in Forbes where he laid out the six things President Biden should highlight for small businesses in his address.
Immediately following President Biden’s State of the Union Address, Rhett Buttle released the following statement:
“In tonight’s State of the Union address, the President laid out a plan to build upon the economic progress made over the last year and continue America’s leadership for democracy, at home and abroad.
“The American Rescue Plan and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Deal have contributed to the fastest economic growth our country has experienced in 40 years, including the creation of nearly 6 million jobs, the lowest rate of unemployment claims since 1969, and a $90 billion increase in retail sales.
“This is crucial progress we've made in overcoming the economic challenges presented by the pandemic, but there is more work to do. Small businesses across the country need policies that will continue to give them a fighting chance, like lowering the cost of healthcare and prescription drugs, increasing access to capital, and modernizing our economy to support small business employees. This includes delivering paid leave programs and affordable childcare for owners and employees, which will help build a stronger, more resilient workforce.
“These investments will help create a more dynamic business environment. A recent survey of small business owners found that 64% say the expanded child tax credit payments put money into the pockets of families, allowing them to spend more money in their communities and at small businesses.
“The strong condemnation of Russia’s unlawful invasion of Ukraine is imperative for American leadership in the fight for democracy around the globe. This is imperative as we consider the challenges facing us here at home. Our research shows that 85 percent of business leaders believe that a strong American economy depends on a well-functioning American democracy, while 72 percent of those surveyed believe that American democracy is being threatened right now. In this moment of global uncertainty and assault on democratic institutions, I am personally heartened to have heard from President Biden’s steady and experienced voice amid the litany of challenges we face.”
