WASHINGTON, D.C.–Today, Sen. Ben Cardin (D-MD), Chair of the U.S. Senate Committee on Small Business, announced that he will retire at the end of this term.
In response to Sen. Cardin’s announcement, Rhett Buttle, Founder and Principal of Public Private Strategies, and Katie V. Wonnenberg, Principal of Public Private Strategies, released the following statement:
“Senator Ben Cardin is a lifelong champion of Main Streets, small businesses, and working people all across Maryland and the country. We join the outpouring of voices on both sides of the aisle who are grateful for Senator Cardin’s five decades of public service – and for his steadfast commitment to building equitable growth and opportunity via his service on the U.S. Senate Committee on Small Business.
"Over the past few years alone, Senator Cardin has led the Senate’s work to protect small businesses and help them recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, including by authoring a critical extension to the Paycheck Protection Program. And he’s played an essential role in shepherding generational investments in the American economy, and in ensuring investments like the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, Inflation Reduction Act, and CHIPS & Science Act have strong provisions to support small businesses and their employees.
“The results of Senator Cardin’s work on behalf of Main Street’s speak for themselves. Over the past two years, 10.5 million new small business applications have been submitted, a record for a two-year period.
“We congratulate Senator Cardin and look forward to continuing our work with him, our partners, and the entire U.S. Senate Committee on Small Business to improve access to capital for minority-owned businesses, and to strengthen the small business landscape in communities across the country.”
